You’ve got to go to one of those big clubs.”He went on to explain that he feels he could have done better than other managers looking at where some of the top clubs have been, potentially hinting at Man United.Southgate has previously been considered for the Man United job, but the club are now keen to hire an elite-level manager and are expected to look elsewhere.“Southgate has been hinting at a return to management,” Brown told Football Insider.“We’ve spoken about him with the Man United job before, and that is the one he seems to be suggesting he could take on, but I think it’s unlikely.“From what I’m told, I don’t think Southgate is an option for them at the moment.“I think he’s a good manager, he did a fantastic job with England, but he’s not going to be the person to take Man United forward with their plans at the moment.“I don’t see any way they let Michael Carrick go at the end of the season and then replace him with Southgate, it’s not going to happen.“He seems happy outside of club management anyway and I’m sure he’s in no rush to jump back in if he isn’t offered a big job, just like he said.“I’m just doubtful about whether he will be offered one of those jobs, because he’s not a contender for United at the moment.”Who will be the next permanent Man United manager?Despite ongoing speculation about who will become the next manager at Old Trafford, Michael Carrick is making the strongest case to land the job.The interim manager has had a successful, albeit short, spell in the dugout and has won five of his six games in charge so far.Brown told Football Insider on 2 March that Benjamin Sesko has loved working under Carrick and is one of the key stars pushing for his appointment.Credit: ImagoWith a number of star players now believed to be keen to continue working with the boss, he is growing increasingly likely to land the permanent position. The likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Niko Kovac have also been considered for the role, but Carrick is in the best position as things stand.
