The Italian was given a 16-minute cameo and the winger made it count as his goal late on in the contest gave Liverpool some hope of a comeback.

Chiesa has struggled for game time this season at Anfield, which makes it surprising that the 27-year-old is just behind Mohamed Salah when it comes to a key metric.

Chiesa arrived at Liverpool last summer as part of a £12.5m deal with Juventus and at that price, the Merseyside club took the risk.

With Salah remaining injury-free, the Italian has not received many minutes to impress throughout the campaign and Jamie Carragher believes Chiesa is a player Slot does not trust at Liverpool.

That changed at the weekend as the winger was sent on to try and help the Reds back into the game and his goal at Wembley made it two goals and two assists for the winger this season.

Although the sample size is extremely small, those two strikes and two assists in 387 minutes of action, means Chiesa is delivering a goal contribution every 97 minutes.

Although pen is yet to be put to paper, Salah is expected to remain at Liverpool next season which means game time for Chiesa would be limited at Anfield once again for the 2025/26 campaign.

However, if the Italian is ok with that, Liverpool should give the winger another chance to prove himself as this season has been chaotic for the 27-year-old without a pre-season, moving clubs, and the injuries he has had to deal with.

There is still a player instead of Chiesa and the Euro 2020 winner showed that on Sunday with his Newcastle cameo.

Liverpool will need someone to step up when Salah goes to the Africa Cup of Nations next season, and there is no reason why it can’t be Chiesa.
