Liverpool fans had a right to be feeling nervous heading into another Premier League weekend.

The Reds dropped points against Aston Villa on Wednesday, with Arsenal given the chance to close the gap to five points three days later.

With the Gunners facing West Ham at home, it had looked set to be a comfortable three points for Liverpool’s title rivals.

But Arsenal slipped up.

Jarrod Bowen served up the sucker-punch, heading home the only goal of the game at the end of the first-half.

Liverpool have been on the receiving end of similar daggers from Bowen, the 28-year-old has three goals in his last five games against the Reds.

Despite his excellent record against his team, though, Jurgen Klopp was a huge fan of Bowen.

And as Liverpool fans rejoice in the name of West Ham’s No.20, they are starting to understand why.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Bowen ever since the England forward’s first season at West Ham.

A left-footed, versatile attacker with an eye for goal, it’s clear to see how Bowen could have fitted into the Liverpool squad.

Although a transfer never materialised, that did not stop Klopp from raving about Bowen any chance he got, though.

Ahead of a Carabao Cup game at Anfield in December 2023, the former Liverpool manager called the West Ham winger his ‘favourite player.’

“With Antonio out, Bowen stepped up in that position,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“I have to say it’s just great how he’s doing and how he’s developed.”

Despite a move to Liverpool never materialising, these transfer links have never truly died down.

Ally McCoist urged Liverpool to go and sign Bowen as recently as December, with the £20m West Ham man enjoying another good season.

However, having turned 28 in December, it’s probably safe to say that we will never see Bowen as a Liverpool player.

Nevertheless, if Liverpool do go on to win the Premier League this season, his contribution to the cause will not be forgotten.

As he watches the Reds push hard to win the league without him, there’s no doubt Jurgen allowed himself a wry smile on Saturday as he watched his favourite put them a step closer to glory.
