Liverpool supporters couldn’t have hoped for a better first half to Arne Slot’s debut Premier League season as head coach.
The Reds currently sit in pole position after twenty-two matches, having suffered just one defeat all season.
Slot has only had to make subtle changes to the team he inherited from Jürgen Klopp, but nobody would have predicted Liverpool to be the frontrunners, less than seven months after the German’s departure.
We will be giving five reasons as to why we believe that Liverpool will WIN a twentieth league title this season.
1.
SIX POINT LEAD WITH GAME IN HAND
Liverpool find themselves in a very healthy position as February nears.
They hold a six-point advantage over Arsenal in second, having played one less game than the Gunners.
Following their upcoming trip to Bournemouth, the Reds will finally play their long-awaited Goodison Merseyside derby against Everton after a December postponement due to adverse weather conditions, forced the game to be played at a later date.
A further advantage that swings in Liverpool’s favour is that Arsenal will host Manchester City this weekend, therefore another opportunity to put pressure back onto their title-challengers, will arise.
Six points from these two away fixtures and a Manchester City win against Arsenal would extend Liverpool’s lead to a significant margin of twelve points.
2.
FINDING WAYS TO WIN
‘Mentality monsters’ has often been a phrase associated with Liverpool over the years.
Many times under Jürgen Klopp were they able to overcome adversity and dramatically find ways to win football matches, and this hasn’t changed with Arne Slot.
In the Premier League this season, the Reds have won fourteen points from losing positions, most recently in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on January 14th.
Liverpool also secured late victory away to Brentford, courtesy of an injury time brace from Darwin Nunez, whilst setting a Premier League record for the most shots by an away team, with 37.
The Reds’ mentality seems to be a cut above the rest and will be key in helping them get over the line.
3.
SALAH’S RECORD-BREAKING FORM
If Mohamed Salah is in your team, then you’re immediately in with a chance of winning a league title.
The Egyptian in unbelievable form this season and the numbers speak for themselves.
Nineteen goals and thirteen assists in the Premier League towards the end of January, is insane.
Salah has also most recently overtaken Thierry Henry, scoring his 176th Premier League goal against Ipswich last Saturday, and is one away from levelling with Frank Lampard.
If Salah can continue this sensational form, he will undoubtedly steer Liverpool to a second Premier League title and be topic of conversation for the Ballon D’or.
4.
ARSENAL’S CONSISTENCY STRUGGLES
This season, Liverpool have become beneficiaries of Manchester City’s shock collapse and Arsenal failing to remain consistent for a sustained run of games.
Last season’s top two have already dropped a combined total of 48 points this term, which has saw the Reds gain a strong lead at the top.
A significant drop-off from Manchester City means they could be as many as fifteen points adrift of Liverpool, if the league leaders are to take maximum points from tricky away matches against Bournemouth and Everton.
As for Arsenal, they could be nine adrift of top spot.
It feels as if the fanbase are relaxed about the position Liverpool find themselves in, purely due to the fact that it is not Manchester City doing the chasing.
In recent seasons, City have handed supporters multiple heartbreaks after 92 and 97 points under Jurgen Klopp, were unbelievably not been enough to win two Premier League titles, losing both by a singular point.
Arsenal are now the closest challengers, but due to the current squad’s inexperience of being in a title-race prior to last season, it feels as if Liverpool will be allowed to drop more points as the Gunners will more than likely do so, as well.
5.
THE BOSS – ARNE SLOT
Arne Slot will be the man who will be given the most credit if he is able to win the Premier League title in his debut season in England.
Slot couldn’t have dreamed to be in this current situation.
His relaxed persona, man management and the dealing of his playing squad day-to-day highlights why FSG and Sporting Director, Richard Hughes, had full faith in appointing him as Klopp’s successor.
The Dutchman has also broken several records in his short time at the club.
Liverpool look destined to win the Premier League title this season, but there remains a long way to go.
Supporters will be hoping that come May, they will be able to celebrate a Premier League title win in normal fashion as COVID-19 played a massive effect on their 2020 triumph.
