The March international break is often regarded as one of the most annoying in the football season, but this year has been quite the exception.

The UEFA Nations League play-offs were an incredible spectacle as three of the four quarter-finals went into extra-time, with two of the games going all the way to penalties as Virgil van Dijk’s Netherlands lost to Spain.

With Curtis Jones also impressing for England, the international break has been an encouraging one for the Reds, though Alisson Becker was forced to return to Liverpool early after picking up a concussion whilst playing for Brazil.

Yet there was one episode during the international break involving Dominik Szoboszlai that caused waves throughout the footballing world, and it might have just cost Liverpool the chance of signing one of the most exciting youngsters in the game.

Szoboszlai’s Hungary were soundly beaten by Turkey in their Nations League play-off, with Real Madrid prospect Arda Guler the star of the show on the night in Budapest as the visiting side secured a 3-0 win.

However, the winger clashed with Szoboszlai during the match, with Guler shushing the £60m Liverpool man in what was a tense affair for Hungary, one that the Anfield midfielder and national team captain made worse after the full-time whistle.

Taking to Instagram, Szoboszlai posted ‘1088’ on Guler’s post from the match, a reference to the number of minutes the youngster has played for Madrid this season despite being a star player for Turkey in the last two years.

Guler then took the conflict one step further, posting to his official Instagram story an edited picture of the scoreline and noting that Turkey scored six past Hungary during their play-off series, with the Madrid star writing: “This guy is a joke.

Isn’t 6 goals enough to shut you up?”

Footballer squabbles are always fascinating to watch from the outside looking in, with Szoboszlai and Guler’s latest squabble one that has been entertaining to look at from afar given how petty the entire thing is.

Yet for the Reds, their hopes of signing the Turkish youngster one day in the future now look all-but gone, with Liverpool interested in signing Guler last summer before Madrid made the decision to keep hold of the winger.

Noted by Target Scouting as a player with ‘world-class’ potential, Guler could have been an option for Liverpool under Arne Slot, yet the youngster’s recent conflict with Szoboszlai has seemingly ruined any hope of the Turkish sensation making the move to Anfield.
