Arne Slot has been a revelation at Liverpool since succeeding Jurgen Klopp, yet it’s easy to forget that the Dutchman wasn’t the favourite to take over last year.
Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso was the clear front-runner for some time to replace Klopp at Anfield having led Bayer Leverkusen to an Invincible double in Germany, with the former Spanish midfielder also guiding the Bundesliga side to the UEFA Europa League final.
Despite links to Liverpool, Alonso opted to remain with Leverkusen for another year, with Slot instead appointed as the former Feyenoord manager now currently looks set to win the Premier League title in his first year in England.
And another Liverpool cult hero has now said he would be open to managing the Reds one day in the future.

Speaking to the Telegraph, former attacker Dirk Kuyt admitted that he would be open to returning to Liverpool as a manager or coach, with the Beerschot boss saying: “Of course, it’s a dream to come back to Anfield.
But at this moment, I like to dream in shorter steps.”
Kuyt stepped into management in 2022 after taking over at Dutch side ADO Den Haag, where the former Liverpool star only lasted a few months before being fired, yet the decision proved to be a blessing in disguise as it led the 44-year-old to Belgian side Beerschot a year later.
The 104-cap Netherlands international guided De Mannekes to promotion back to the Belgian Pro League, though this season has been one to forget for Kuyt, with Beerschot’s relegation back down to the second-tier confirmed last weekend.

Indeed, Kuyt returning to Liverpool as manager might need a few more years before it can become a realistic appointment, but the signs are there that the former Anfield star could take on some role from the sideline with the Reds.
Liverpool fans will always be dreaming of a club legend one day taking over and leading the club to glory, a reason why Alonso was such a favourite to take over in the summer once Klopp’s departure was announced.
Yet for Kuyt and any other Liverpool legend, they will be waiting a while for their shot to take over at Liverpool as long as Slot is at the wheel, with the Dutch coach proving to be the dream successor to Klopp at Anfield.
Nobody predicted Slot to do as well as he has at Liverpool this season, and there’s a real chance that the former Feyenoord manager could be at the helm in the red half of Merseyside for as long as Klopp if things continue at their current pace.
