'A shame': Michael Owen names the one factor that will stop Mo Salah from winning the Ballon d'Or

Mohamed Salah is on course for a historic season with Liverpool, with the winger breaking records seemingly on a weekly basis.

The Egyptian international leads the Premier League goalscoring and assist charts with Salah likely to match Thierry Henry’s record of scoring and assisting 20+ goals in a single season, with Liverpool also set to secure the title.

As a result of the Liverpool star’s form, the 32-year-old attacker is a strong favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or, with Theo Walcott backing Salah for the award with no player in Europe likely to match what the winger has done this season.

However, Michael Owen believes that one factor from Liverpool’s season could now stop Salah from winning the Ballon d’Or this year.

Speaking on TalkSport, the former England striker said Liverpool’s early exit from the UEFA Champions League could have potentially cost Salah the Ballon d’Or, with recent award winners often players who that season won the biggest prize in European club football.

With this summer also free from a major international tournament, Salah’s only chance at silverware this season is the Premier League, and Owen believes this title alone won’t be enough to help the winger secure the Ballon d’Or.

Owen said: “It’s going to be dependent on what’s going on at club level, I would have said Mo Salah, but getting knocked out of Europe by PSG, even if Liverpool go on to win the Premier League, I can’t see that being enough, which is a shame, but you’ve got to tick every box.

“You’ve got to be an outstanding player at an outstanding club and an outstanding national team.

All your stars have got to align, and I just think for Salah, who obviously deserves one, with Liverpool only winning the Premier League, it won’t be enough.”

With 32 goals and 22 assists in all competitions with nine games left to go, there’s a real chance that Salah could hit 70+ goal contributions in all competitions if the winger’s form doesn’t slip between now and the final match of the season.

Even if Salah ends the season with just the Premier League title, the forward’s performances will be too good to overlook to those voting in this year’s Ballon d’Or, with numbers like this only comparable to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in their primes.

Indeed, Salah is the best player in the world right now based on form, and the Egyptian will want to end the season on a high and to push his Ballon d’Or case even further with nine games remaining.
