Jamie Carragher has faced criticism after he appeared to play down the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations when discussing Mohamed Salah's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or.
Speaking after Salah scored his 30th goal of the season during Liverpool's win over Manchester City on Sunday, Carragher said that Salah's failure to rank highly in previous Ballon d'Or years — his highest finish was fifth in 2019 — might have something to do with him "not playing in a major (international) tournament".
"Jamie Carragher doesn’t know what Major Tournaments is because he never won one," Elmohamady wrote.
"AFCON is A Major Tournament?
So proud to won it twice."
On Sunday, Carragher had said of Salah's Ballon d'Or struggles: "I think the problem [is] the fact he's with Egypt, and he's probably not playing in the major tournament as such or maybe got a great chance of winning, I think it's either the Champions League or the major tournament [that influences who wins the Ballon d'Or].
"Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr and (Kylian) Mbappe right now, Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League.
Micah Richards chimed in: "Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying, 'They aren't taking it seriously'
AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know."
Carragher clapped back by asking the former Manchester City defender if he thought Egypt had a chance of winning the World Cup
