Abbey Clancy 'never thought' it would happen as she returns to Liverpool

Abbey Clancy has spoken out after her husband, Peter Crouch, scored once again at Anfield. The 44-year-old dad-of-four dusted off his football boots and joined a host of Liverpool FC legends to take on Chelsea on Saturday, March 23.

The afternoon game gave supporters the chance to reminisce about some of the iconic players who have played for the club in the past. Although favourites like Dirk Kuyt, Sami Hyypia and Jerzy Dudek formed part of the squad managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish, it was thought from a Liverpool perspective, that the main attraction was to be Steven Gerrard.

However, Peter, who was introduced as a half-time substitute, scored twice securing Liverpool Legends the win over Chelsea 2-0 when the final whistle blew. Of course, following the goal, Peter, who played for Liverpool from 2005 to 2008, brought back his iconic celebration.

Now that the dust has settled, wife Abbey has taken to social media to express how “proud” she was of her husband. She wrote: “What an incredible day. I'm so proud of my husband. Never thought I’d see him score at Anfield again!! Two goals, wow!!!

“Great catching up with old friends and being back in my home city thank you @thelfcfoundation for making us feel so welcome and looking after us all so well, and to the guys at @lfcretail who made the kid's day lots of love #YNWA.”

Peter is believed to be already eyeing up a second appearance for Liverpool Legends after Saturday’s highlight. It marked Crouch’s first appearance in a charity match following his retirement from playing in 2019.

And despite having not played for Liverpool since 2008, he was afforded the warmest of receptions back at Anfield in front of his watching family - second only to club captain Steven Gerrard.

He said: “Honestly, I’m genuinely really pleased because you just never think you’ll even get the opportunity to play at Anfield again. To score two at the Kop end, I’m so happy.

“First and foremost, it’s about the foundation and raising money. The amount of people who were here today is a credit to the club really and the fanbase.

“But I’ve also got my family here. My little boy had never seen me play, he’s only five so I’ve been saying to him, ‘I did play, I swear, I promise!’ For him to see it first hand, at Liverpool as well, it’s a good moment for my family.

“Having played for Liverpool, there is something special about this club. Once you play for a club like Liverpool and you speak to all the players, it just touches you.

“It’s so special. To get invited back, and even before today, you walk down the street and everyone is really kind about my time here. They’re so knowledgeable about the game as well. I always enjoy coming back, but I probably enjoyed today more than most."

All of the game's proceeds will go to the LFC foundation, which will support beneficiaries, including Forever Reds, Chelsea FC Foundation, and the Chelsea Players’ Trust.
