Ajax director Alex Kroes explained what transpired during the January transfer window regarding Jordan Henderson and why the former Liverpool captain’s critics are wrong.
Henderson found himself at the centre of a transfer saga that left Ajax fans and management stunned during the winter transfer window.
According to several reports that made the round late during the window, the 34-year-old midfielder, who joined the Dutch giants just a year ago, was attempting to force a move to AS Monaco.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Monaco and Henderson were close to agreeing to a deal until June 2026.
However, his efforts to leave the club were thwarted by the management of Ajax.
The club’s technical director, Alex Kroes, took a firm stance, rejecting Monaco’s advances for Henderson.
Henderson eventually made a U-turn and decided to remain at Ajax, with De Telegraaf reporting that the Englishman showed regret in the manner in which he acted during the saga.
Henderson was forced to explain himself to the media shortly after the incident.
During the terse press interview, the former Liverpool man took exception to being accused of trying to force a move away from Ajax, claiming that most of what was written in the press about the situation was false.
Ajax’s director has clarified what happened while also revealing why Henderson has struggled to be accepted in the Netherlands.
What Ajax director said about Jordan Henderson
Kroes admitted that Henderson has been undervalued in the Netherlands from the beginning, adding that the criticism has begun to ‘eat away’ at the former Liverpool man.
“They (Monaco) came forward at some point to take over Jordan, and I said from the very first moment: ‘No, thank you, good luck with it,” Kroes told club channels (quoted by the De Telegraaf).
“We are not letting him go.
Period.’ Fortunately, he just stayed.”
The director added that Henderson had remained committed to Ajax “by always giving everything on the field and also in training, before hitting out at the 34-year-old’s critics, who declared him to be a waste of money.
“What has been going on with Jordan is that he has not felt wanted at Ajax from minute one,” Kroes admitted.
“That is not because of me, the trainer, the management or the people around him.
At some point, that also starts to eat away at a person.
“That is a great shame because his value to Ajax is more than enormous.
No, he did not apologize.”
