Newcastle United ended their 70-year wait for domestic silverware in spectacular fashion on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley as club legend Alan Shearer looked on from the stands.

Newcastle took control of the final from the outset, displaying superior intensity and determination against a Liverpool side that appeared sluggish following their Champions League exit to PSG earlier in the week.

The former striker, who captained Newcastle in the 1999 FA Cup final but never managed to win silverware with his boyhood club, was spotted jumping for joy in the stands when Burn headed Newcastle in front.

The celebrations continued long after the trophy presentation, with Newcastle’s triumphant players heading to Boxpark Wembley for a raucous afterparty.

The champagne-soaked Toon stars invited Alan Shearer to join them as they toasted their historic achievement.

And taking to X last night after having perhaps one too many rounds to drink, the Newcastle United legend did not forget to pay his respects to the Reds:

“I know I’m p*ssed but …….

Liverpool are a great club and will win the league and have been brilliant this season but the Geordies absolutely smashed them today and deserved it!”

Nobody can argue that the better team won on the day at Wembley.

For Liverpool, the defeat marked their second major setback in a matter of days, following their Champions League elimination by PSG?

Despite this disappointment, Arne Slot’s side still sits 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League and remains on course for a record-equaling 20th English title.
