Alexis Mac Allister delivered a midfield masterclass as Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City extended their Premier League lead to 11 points, before revealing the incident that left him nursing something like a black eye post-match.
Liverpool’s first league win at the Etihad since 2015 showcased Arne Slot’s tactical innovation, with Mac Allister at the heart of a reimagined system4
His 13th-minute corner routine proved decisive – a rehearsed play seeing him dummy Nathan Aké before slipping a disguised pass to Dominik Szoboszlai, whose deft touch teed up Mohamed Salah’s deflected opener.
But it seems there was a cost to his world-class showing at the Etihad on Sunday.
Alexis Mac Allister explains blackeye concerns
In the wake of the potentially title-defining win, Alexis Mac Allister took to Instagram to share a bruised right eye and some swelling around his cheek.
With Liverpool leading 1-0, a 30th-minute collision during City’s disallowed Omar Marmoush goal saw Mac Allister sustain facial injuries.
The Egpytian landed on Liverpool’s No.10, with medical staff conducting concussion protocols during a 3-minute stoppage.
Speaking after the game in the mixed media zone ( as quoted by the Liverpool Echo), Mac Allister did not seem too worried and explained how it happened.
“Basically when Marmoush scored the goal which was disallowed he hit me, he landed on me and I hit the floor,” Mac Allister said.
“I felt a little bit dizzy but it is something that happens.”
Luckily, it does not seem too serious and he is expected to be in contention to face Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.
