Liverpool have been handed an injury scare after Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni confirmed that Alexis Mac Allister has reported for international duty with an issue.

MacAllister sat out training as a result and is a possible doubt for their latest 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chile.

The 25-year-old has been an ever-present for Arne Slot’s side so far this season and was in impressive form once again in the Reds’ 3-0 dismantling of Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

But Scaloni has confirmed that Mac Allister reported for international duty ‘in pain’ with Argentina continuing to assess the midfielder after he missed training.

“Alexis didn’t train because he was overloaded, he was in pain,” Scaloni told TyC Sports.

The rest of the team is more or less decided.”

Argentina take on Chile in the early hours of Friday morning UK time before travelling to Colombia next Tuesday, with it remaining to be seen what role Mac Allister can play in either match.

Mac Allister remains with his international camp despite the issue but Liverpool team-mate Harvey Elliott has withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad because of an injury issue of his own.

In an official statement, the young Lions confirmed that the 21-year-old was one of four players who had returned to his club for ‘further medical assessment’ after initially reporting to St.

George’s Park earlier in the week.

Elliott had been a star performer for Liverpool during pre-season but has found himself behind Dominik Szoboszlai in the pecking order since the campaign got underway.

An unused substitute against Manchester United on Sunday, a seven-minute substitute appearance against Brentford remains the limit of his action under Slot so far this season.

The Dutchman spoke about Elliott’s limited action so far this season at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Manchester United.

?

“I think the disadvantage for some of them without having a lot of playing time is we only have one game a week, so we don't have to manage game time in that perspective,” he said.

“Harvey came in 10 minutes, it's not a lot but he – like some others who are not playing – has a lot of competition.

“That's one of the reasons why we only brought in one player because we think we have a lot of good players and we already have a lot of competition.

?

“Harvey will get, in my opinion, a lot of playing time if he keeps doing what he does at the moment – work really hard, show his quality when he comes in.

“He already showed his quality in pre-season, but he is in competition at this moment.

It's a luxury to have the choice between the two of them.”

Liverpool return to action after the September international break at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
