Alisson Becker sparked injury concern over the international break when he was forced to return to Merseyside for medical assessment after sustaining a suspected concussion during Brazil’s 2-1 World Cup qualifier victory over Colombia on March 20, 2025.
The 32-year-old collided with defender Davinson Sanchez in the 78th minute, prompting immediate substitution under FIFA’s concussion protocols.
The clash occurred as Alisson punched away a free kick, colliding head-to-head with Sanchez.
Brazil’s team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, confirmed the goalkeeper reported dizziness and ear pain but no loss of consciousness or memory issues.
Alisson underwent initial on-field treatment before being stretchered off as a precaution.
Per FIFA guidelines, players with suspected concussions must abstain from training or matches for at least six days and pass a graded return-to-play protocol.
This ruled Alisson out of Brazil’s qualifier against Argentina on March 25 and prompted his early return to Liverpool.
The Reds’ medical team conducted further imaging tests, including a CT scan and MRI, followed by cognitive assessments.
Alisson reassured fans via social media recently, writing: “Hey guys, just to let you know I’m fine!
Thanks for the messages”.
Liverpool confirmed his return in a statement, emphasizing collaboration with Brazil’s football federation (CBF) to ensure compliance with safety measures
The injury comes at a critical juncture, with Liverpool 12 points clear atop the Premier League and set to face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday.
However, it seems Alisson will be fit to face Everton this week.
That’s because injury expert Ben Dinnery has confirmed the Brazilian is in training this week:
“Alisson has returned to the training pitches,” he wrote on X on Monday.
“Alisson, Gravenberch, and Konate are all training with the group, although France manager Didier Deschamps said the latter was not injury-related after he was withdrawn at half-time [in France vs Croatia].”
“Conor Bradley continues to work on an individualised programme.”
With Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, and Conor Bradley already sidelined, Arne Slot will want as many of his defensive regulars in the side as possible.
Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch is also expected to be fit despite leaving the Dutch camp over the March break.
His exit was labelled as just general fatigue, and hopefully, the 22-year-old managed to recharge his batteries over the club pause.
