Alisson Becker has made a slightly surprising Anfield observation after Liverpool’s Champions League journey came to a painful end on Tuesday night.
The Reds entered the second leg with a slender 1-0 advantage from their first-leg victory in Paris but saw their lead erased when Ousmane Dembele capitalized on a defensive error in the 12th minute.
Ibrahima Konate’s attempted block of Bradley Barcola’s shot inadvertently pushed the ball away from goalkeeper Alisson, leaving Dembele with a simple finish into an empty net.
Despite creating numerous opportunities throughout the remainder of regular time and the additional 30 minutes of extra time, Liverpool couldn’t find a breakthrough to retake the lead.
The hosts hit the woodwork and had a goal from Luis Diaz ruled out for offside as tension mounted at Anfield
When the match eventually proceeded to penalties after 120 exhausting minutes, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma emerged as the hero for the French side.
The Italian international saved spot kicks from both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, while PSG converted all four of their penalties to secure a 4-1 shootout victory and progression to the quarter-finals.
And for Alisson Becker, he revealed that it was his very first time partaking in a penalty shoot-out at Anfield since his 2018 transfer:
“It was the first time at Anfield for me, many years here, but the first penalty situation,” the 32-year-old said to TNT Sports Brazil (via Sport Witness) after the defeat.
“I had a few with the national team, in the FA Cup [final against Chelsea in 2022], we won, a different situation.
I had successes, failures, penalties depend on a lot of things.”
“Everything is very focused on the goalkeepers, but also on the takers.
And today, maybe we deserved the win.
“We couldn’t do it, their team also defended with everything they had, throwing themselves at the ball, the goalkeeper had a great game?
Then, anything can happen on a penalty.”
Despite the disappointment of their European exit, Liverpool have an immediate opportunity to bounce back and secure silverware when they face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
The timing of the showpiece event provides Slot’s side with the perfect platform to demonstrate their resilience and refocus their ambitions on domestic success.
