Andy Robertson blew a fuse with Virgil van Dijk after a calamitous mix-up that almost threw away three crucial points for Liverpool.

But Van Dijk quickly made amends by heading a late winner to down West Ham and move the Reds within two wins of the title.

The champions-elect were hanging on in the final stages after Luis Diaz's first-half opener was cancelled out by Robertson's disastrous 86th minute own goal.

Arne Slot's defence failed to deal with a simple cross as ex-Celtic stopper Van Dijk bundled into Robbo, resulting in the Scotland left-back knocking the ball into his own net.

Robertson, 31, flipped out at his skipper as he furiously screamed "Virg" - fearing the comical coming together would cost Liverpool a priceless victory.

But Van Dijk turned out to be the hero as the Dutch stopper powered home the winning goal just moments later as the Reds edged closer to being crowned champions.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was on commentary duties for Sky Sports and couldn't believe what he had seen.

The pundit said: "[Virgil] He's got to see that coming, it's like he doesn't even know he's there. Initially, when the cross comes in, it's just a mess. You see how furious Andy Robertson is, but actually, it's Van Dijk.

"They almost tackle each other and you have to look back at communication. Andy Robertson's got to be screaming at him - and you see his reaction, maybe he was screaming at him.

"Virgil van Dijk wasn't listening, you can't say it hasn't been coming. Liverpool have been awful in the second-half."

Liverpool are now within touching distance of the title and can clinch the trophy if they pick up maximum points against Leicester City and Tottenham.
