Liverpool are no strangers to high expectations.
The club demands trophies, and every manager who takes charge knows that.
When Jurgen Klopp left, there were concerns about how the team would move forward.
Would the new manager take time to settle?
Would Liverpool remain competitive at the top?
Arne Slot didn’t hesitate.
From his first meeting with the squad, he made his ambitions clear.
There was no talk of transition or rebuilding.
He knew what the players wanted, and he set the standard from day one.
Andy Robertson revealed exactly what was said.
Andy Robertson reveals what Arne Slot told Liverpool players in pre-season
The Scottish defender recalled Slot’s first meeting in pre-season, saying, “When you’re at a club like Liverpool, you can’t afford a settling-in period.”
“It’s a massive club that expects to win trophies – and the manager was very clear on that from his first day.”
Slot wasted no time in setting the target.
“I remember his first meeting in America, and he basically said, ‘We finished third last season and the season before, but we now want to finish above the other two.’”
Robertson explained how this mentality spread through the squad.
“In his mind, it was clear that he was coming to win trophies.
It wasn’t like he’d be happy with the top four.”
He added, “When the manager and the coaches took the job, I think their remit was ‘We want to win trophies, we want Liverpool to be successful and not just by finishing in the top four.’”
“The players could get onboard with that.”
Now, with Liverpool 15 points clear at the top of the table, Slot’s message is proving to be more than just words.
