Liverpool have made a virtue of taking it one game at a time under Arne Slot this season.

But while there are some significant games to come over the next few fortnight, there's no doubt some supporters have been keeping more than a casual eye on the League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday week.

That became apparent at the weekend when it emerged the red card awarded to Anthony Gordon for striking out at Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke during the Magpies' 2-1 home FA Cup fifth round defeat would rule him out of the clash against Liverpool.

Throw in the fact Alexander Isak departed the game soon after having missed the Premier League defeat at Anfield a few days earlier with a groin problem, and it could potentially prove a very costly afternoon for the Toon Army.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe later played down fears of a serious issue for Isak and spoke of the player feeling "general tightness" after leaving the field accompanied by a physiotherapist.

The Magpies, though, could be without Lewis Hall for Wembley, with the left-back due to see a specialist this week to assess an ankle injury.

Centre-back Sven Botman, who has been out with a knee problem, is also a major doubt for the final, while Newcastle continue to be without captain Jamaal Lascelles, who tore his ACL last March.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be without at least two players as they aim for a record-extending 11th League Cup final triumph.

Joe Gomez has had surgery after aggravating a hamstring problem in the FA Cup defeat at Plymouth Argyle last month on his return following six weeks out, while Tyler Morton is recovering from a shoulder operation that is likely to have ended his season prematurely.

And Conor Bradley is a doubt having missed the last two games after injuring his hamstring late on in the Premier League draw at Aston Villa a fortnight ago.

Liverpool have three more games to negotiate until the League Cup final, with the two legs of the Champions League round of 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain sandwiched by the Premier League visit of Southampton on Saturday.

Newcastle play only one more game, which is the top-flight trip to West Ham United next Monday.
