Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon will miss the upcoming Carabao Cup final as things stand following his straight red card in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Brighton.

The England international was dismissed for violent conduct after pushing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the face, resulting in an automatic three-match suspension that includes the Wembley showpiece on March 16.

Gordon received his marching orders in the 83rd minute of Newcastle’s eventual 2-1 extra-time defeat to Brighton at St.

The dismissal came after the 24-year-old forward pushed van Hecke in the head during a tussle for the ball, leaving referee Anthony Taylor with little choice but to show him a straight red card

The red card proved costly not only for Gordon personally but also for Newcastle’s FA Cup ambitions, as they eventually succumbed to a Danny Welbeck goal six minutes from the end of extra time

Speaking after the game, Eddie Howe suggested that the Magpies would be appealing should there be grounds for an appeal:

And speaking to Football Insider, Hackett has asserted that Anthony Taylor was fully justified in the sending off:

“When you place your hand, or hands, into the face of the opponent with a degree of force, it really leaves the referee – in this case Anthony Taylor – little option other than to show a red card and dismiss the player from the field,” Hackett said.

“There’s no clear and obvious error, there’s no VAR intervention on that one, Taylor had no option other than to dismiss him.”

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher echoed this sentiment, suggesting Newcastle would have “no chance” with an appeal.

So, it would certainly seem that Gordon will be out for the Wembley showpiece on March 16 in what can only be an advantage for Liverpool.
