Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is the latest forward player being linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.

Gordon, 23, joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 and his performances on Tyneside earned him a place in England's Euro 2024 squad.

Since his £45m to St James' Park, the tricky winger has scored 13 goals and registered a further 11 assists.

Before June 30's PSR deadline, it was reported that Liverpool were interested in Gordon.

Arne Slot is understood to be looking to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the 2024/25 season.

With that being said, the ECHO has taken a look at all the updates surrounding Gordon and a potential move to Anfield.

Quansah decision

Liverpool's strong interest in Gordon wasn't enough to get a deal over the line before July due to the Reds' call to keep hold of Jarell Quansah.

Gordon signed for Newcastle from Everton for an initial £40m, with the deal rising to £45m.

Gordon has a remaining book value of £32m, so the £40m fee that was mooted for Gordon would give them a rather minimal £8m profit, one that wouldn’t have been enormously impactful for PSR.

It wasn’t a deal that worked for Liverpool, though, given that at Quansah’s £20m value, a valuation on the low side using guidance from Transfermarkt, would’ve taken the overall cost of the deal to £60m and left the Reds lighter in defence, a position they require depth, while wide areas are not a pressing concern in terms of depth at present.

Newcastle's financial situation

Newcastle's failure to qualify for the Champions League means the Magpies were faced with raising funds via player sales to balance their books.

However, Gordon was not a player sold before June 30's deadline after Liverpool failed to make a bid that matched the asking price.

Instead, Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35m and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for £33m.

Player stance

Despite only moving to Newcastle in 2023, Gordon's head has reportedly been turned by the interest from Liverpool.

According to Telegraph Sport, the forward had been extremely keen on the move.

Gordon forced his way out of Everton before moving to Newcastle, refusing to turn up to training as an attempt to put pressure on the Toffees' to sell him.

First interest

Before the end of last season, Liverpool's interest in Gordon was first reported by the Daily Record.
