Cody Gakpo complains to Anthony Taylor(Image: Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)
Anthony Taylor has been appointed to oversee Liverpool’s showdown with Manchester City – and the decision won't have gone down too well with some Reds supporters.
Liverpool visit the reigning Premier League champions in what could be a crucial Sunday in the title race.
Meanwhile, City realistically need to win to keep their very slim title hopes alive, let alone their top-four aspirations after being dumped out the Champions League by Real Madrid this week.
The Premier League have confirmed that Greater Manchester-born official Taylor will take charge of the game, with the appointment being criticised by pockets of Reds fans.
But with play still active, a think-quicking Gakpo gained possession and looked set to roll the ball into the net, only for Taylor to blow the whistle, despite the fact that there had seemingly been no foul.
With Reds fans raging and pundits bemused, the official excuse given was that Taylor had in fact spotted a foul but gave an advantage.
The explanation didn’t sit well with many, including former West Ham player and coach Stuart Pearce, who said Taylor had “made his own rules up here to cover his mistake”, while Alan Shearer called the incident “messy” and said that Taylor had made an error by not blowing his whistle following the initial collision.

During October’s meeting with Arsenal at the Emirates, the Reds benefited from a Taylor decision.
He's had a good game the referee, so I can't criticise him for that to be honest with you."

In the same game, Taylor showed Slot a yellow card, but the Reds boss insisted it stemmed from a mix-up after he had remarked to Ibrahima Konate that Gunners players were going to ground too often.
Slot said: “Last time [against Chelsea], I said I completely deserve the yellow card and this time I don’t think I did.
After so many times they were on the floor, which can happen in football, and I don’t blame them for that, but they always fell down after they had ball possession and it took the energy out of the game in my opinion.”
The Reds boss added: “I said to Ibou [Konate], ‘this is a f****** joke’ and the fourth official thought I said to him, ‘you are a f****** joke’.
