Liverpool coach Arne Slot has admitted to being unable to make the most of Darwin Nunez’s talent.
Nunez has been a mixed bag since he joined Liverpool from Baenfica three summers ago.
The Uruguay international has endured a challenging 2024/25 campaign in front of goal.
He has just three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions, a poor return for the 25-year-old considering the abundance of chances this Liverpool team creates.
Even more worrying is that his shot conversion rate has plummeted to a mere 7%, far from the standard expected of a top-tier striker.
While other members of the Liverpool attack have picked up under Arne Slot, Nunez continues to falter.
Nevertheless, Slot has remained patient with Nunez, recently jumping to his defence while dismissing claims he lacks confidence.
However, the Dutchman has now revealed some frustrations with managing the Nunez.
What Arne Slot said about Darwin Nunez
Speaking to Paul Joyce of the Athletic, Slot shared his frustration that he had not yet managed to unlock Darwin Nunez’s full potential.
“Darwin is a striker we have to use in a certain way and we were not able yet to bring the best out of him this season,” he told The Athletic.
Slot also admitted that the way in which opponents set up also affects the use of Nunez.
“Against Accrington Stanley [in the FA Cup], again, you saw that he has a lot of pace, but, unfortunately for him, most teams sit back a lot against us,” Slot said.
“If you look back at the goals he scored for us, I remember the one against [Aston] Villa when he went around the goalkeeper on a fast break.
But I also see, and I don’t know if other people see this, the way teams defend our No9 is something you have to give credit to the other teams for.
