Liverpool are set to compete for the Carabao Cup against Newcastle on Sunday.
The EFL Cup is the first trophy on offer in English football this season and winning the competition would be a big bonus for Arne Slot’s men as the Reds are also on the verge of winning the Premier League this season.
Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted that Liverpool are ‘ready to fight’ at Wembley on Sunday as the Merseyside club look to bounce back from being eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday night at the hands of PSG.
Paul Merson believes that setback gives Newcastle an advantage over Liverpool ahead of the Carabao Cup final as both clubs look to make history.

For Newcastle, this Sunday’s Carabao Cup final means a lot for the Tyneside club as they have not tasted success since winning the FA Cup against Man City back in 1955.
This will put a lot of pressure on Eddie Howe’s shoulders but history is also on the line for Slot as the Dutch coach looks to achieve something Liverpool’s three greatest managers never could.
Jurgen Klopp, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley did not experience silverware during their first seasons in charge of the Reds, which is something Slot can add to his legacy by bringing the Carabao Cup back to Merseyside.
That will eventually happen for the former Feyenoord boss as Liverpool are running away with the Premier League, but it is an achievement the 46-year-old would like to experience sooner rather than later.

Winning a league title will already set Slot on the path to becoming a Liverpool great but the more trophies the Dutch coach adds, the more obvious that status is likely to be awarded to the Reds boss.
Slot has improved several players at Liverpool since joining the Reds last summer and that has contributed to the success the Merseyside club have experienced during his first season in charge.
When it comes to the first campaigns of a manager at Anfield, none have been greater than Joe Fagan’s after the English coach took over from Bob Paisley ahead of the 1983/84 season.
Similar to Slot, Fagan inherited a great squad from the legendary Reds boss, but that should not diminish the achievement of that Liverpool team going on to win an unprecedented treble, winning the English League, League Cup, and European Cup.
This achievement may never be seen again at Liverpool or any other club in the Premier League, which is why it goes down as the greatest first season in the Merseyside club’s rich history.
