Arne Slot has revealed Liverpool’s plans to improve their poor set-piece conversion rate.
Liverpool have been one of the lowest-scoring sides in the Premier League this season from set pieces.
A recent analysis by Sky Sports showed that Liverpool have failed to score a goal from a throw-in or free-kick situation this season.
However, they did find the net from a corner in their last game, with Virgil van Dijk scoring from a corner situation to hand Liverpool a massive three points against West Ham.
The win took the club to within six points of winning the Premier League title this season.
A win at Leicester City on Sunday could confirm the title should Arsenal fail to win Ipswich Town.
Otherwise, the Reds can be crowned champions next week when they host Tottenham at Anfield.
While the Premier League title is almost wrapped up, Liverpool coach Arne Slot is already looking at perfecting a part of his team’s tactics ahead of the coming season.
Discussing with Jamie Carragher about the club’s current inability to take their chances from set-piece situations, Slot admitted that he is looking to improve Liverpool’s set pieces, as mastering them has become part of the modern game.
“I think, even more, how big of an accomplishment it is to be on top of the league if we all know how important set-pieces have become in general in football, let alone in this league,” he told Carragher in an interview with Sky Sports.
“Barcelona outplayed Dortmund with a 4-0 win, but the first goal was a set-piece.”
“So it helps you to get a momentum, it helps you for so many things.
So, yes, we need to improve on set-pieces, so when we played Paris Saint-Germain, that’s going to be interesting for the semi-final, we thought, and it is true that they are quite poor in defending set-pieces, so we thought we need to score from a set-piece against them.
“And we put a lot of effort in, we were very close with Jarell Quansah with a header on the post.
So, because we didn’t score a set-piece in that tie, maybe that’s also it.”
“It’s impossible to win a game of football, which is top teams against each other, or a tie like us against Paris Saint-Germain, you need a positive set-piece balance or a neutral one.
“If you lose the battle of set-pieces, it’s hardly impossible to win a game of football, and the good thing for us is defensively we do well, maybe we do well, but offensively a team like us that has so many set-pieces has to score more.”
