Arne Slot has lavished Curtis Jones with praise after his impressive performance at right back in Liverpool’s last game.

After two up defeats before the international break, Liverpool returned to winning ways on Wednesday, defeating Everton 1-0 at Anfield to take one step closer to the Premier League title.

Diogo Jota scored the only goal of the night in a game almost overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision.

The game’s defining flashpoint occurred in the 11th minute when Tarkowski launched into a high, studs-up challenge that caught Mac Allister’s standing leg above the ankle.

Despite VAR reviewing the incident, referee Samuel Barrott’s yellow card decision stood – a judgment even Everton manager David Moyes later admitted was fortunate.

PGMOL has since admitted privately that Tarkowski should have been sent off.

Slot reacted to the incident in his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s game with Fulham on Sunday.

The Dutchman also spoke about Curtis Jones’ performance in the game

The Liverpool coach named a surprising XI for the game against Everton, the saw Jones asked to play in the right-back position, given the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley.

The No.

17 put in a decent shift in his new unorthodox defensive position.

Speaking before the Fulham game, Slot was asked about the benefits of Jones’ ability to play in several positions, and he replied: “That’s very useful for me.

Of course, me and Richard [Hughes] talk a lot about this season and next season, and it is nice to have versatile players, and Curtis is definitely one of them.

Slot then went on to explain why the England midfielder can play in different positions and his mentality.

“He has a skill set that he can defend, he can attack, and that’s why he can play in so many positions.

And he has this mentality [that] if you give him a challenge, he likes to be challenged, and yesterday was a challenge for him because it wasn’t his normal position.

“Some players hate a challenge; they like to stay in their comfort zone, but Curtis is the type of player who wants to be challenged if you challenge him.

“If you tell him he is playing against the best English midfielder under 21 or something like this, and I want to see how you do against that, then he is up for the challenge.

I didn’t ask him to stand up against [Abdoulaye] Doucoure after the away game, but he likes those challenges as well!

“So, good to have him?
