Liverpool took a significant step towards qualification from the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.
The Reds have started their campaign in Europe in exactly the same manner as their domestic season: brilliantly.
After three wins from three, though, facing German champions Bayer Leverkusen felt like a big obstacle for Arne Slot and his team to overcome.
But although they struggled a little through the first-half against Xabi Alonso’s side, Liverpool upped the ante in the second period to blow Leverkusen away.
For Slot, the win continued his record as having the best start to life for any manager in Liverpool’s history.
As well as cementing his legacy in that respect, though, it turns out that the Liverpool head coach also passed some coaching luminaries with this latest victory.

It really has been a stunning start to life at Anfield for Slot.
The Dutchman will perhaps claim that it is exactly the kind of thing which should be expected at Liverpool, and he’d be right.

But even seen through that prism, what Slot is doing is truly remarkable.
And the stats bear that out.
As reported by The Coaches Voice on X after Tuesday night’s game, the 46-year-old has now overtaken Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti as having the best ever win rate at a new Premier League club after 16 matches.

Having won 14 of those 16, Slot is sitting top of the pile, with Mourinho and Ancelotti one win behind in joint second, both as manager of Chelsea.
Given that it was 20 years since Mourinho’s brilliant start and 15 for Ancelotti, it just goes to show what an impressive job Arne is doing.
With ex-Arsenal manager Unai Emery also on 12, this little list can also serve as a warning that a good start does not always mean a good overall picture.
It really feels like more plaudits should be coming Slot’s way for the way he has hit the ground running at Liverpool.
However, although it is great to push ahead of Mourinho and Ancelotti – both of whom won the Premier League title at the first time of asking – perhaps Emery’s position in this table should be the most instructive.
As seen by these statistics, the Spaniard was viewed as the perfect appointment following Arsene Wenger’s long and successful time at Arsenal.
Although Jurgen Klopp was not at Liverpool for anything like the time Wenger spent in North London, there are parallels there.
Despite his good start things ultimately went South for Emery and he was sacked after less than 18 months.
Slot must learn from that to not get ahead of himself.
