There’s no getting away from the fact that it has been a disappointing season for Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa.
The pair, for different reasons, are firmly fifth and sixth in the pecking order when it comes to Liverpool’s attacking options.
For Nunez, a return of just six goals from 29 appearances across all competitions has certainly not laid to rest the concerns over his finishing that have been around since the moment he made the move from Benfica in a club-record $106m (£85m/€101m) deal.
Now in his third year, it does feel as though fans have reached a final verdict on him, and it would be no great surprise to see him move on in the summer
Federico Chiesa and Darwin Nunez have a big point to prove against PSV
As for Chiesa, a $15.6m (£12.5m/€14.9m) transfer from Juventus during the summer seemed like a no-brainer, even if his injury problems left a slight question mark
Considering he’s vying with Salah for a place on the right, he may well have to make the most of his opportunity on Wednesday - assuming he gets it.
And it’s with Salah in mind that both Nunez and Chiesa need to prove that they can step up for Liverpool
The Egyptian’s future is still up in the air, and if he is to leave Anfield in the summer, that will leave a massive hole in Slot’s squad.
Both Nunez and Chiesa have also been linked with exits, but if Salah does leave, will Liverpool really want to be overhauling its attack so drastically by offloading another two options?
It’s up to these two players tonight then to show they can step up in Salah’s advance, and potentially provide Liverpool with the answer that could solve the biggest of dilemmas in the summer.
