Arne Slot has admitted he can’t predict whether Virgil van Dijk could extend his stay at Liverpool even further after signing a new contract this week.
Van Dijk has committed his future to the Reds, putting to bed any speculation by signing a new two-year deal at Anfield.
He follows in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, who also extended his stay to 2027 last week in a huge coup for Liverpool.
It is something of a departure from the norm for FSG, considering Van Dijk and Salah are aged 33 and 32 respectively.
Van Dijk has shown little sign of slowing down, and having now pledged his future to the Reds, the possibility of the Netherlands international emulating Thiago Silva by playing in the Premier League well into his late-30s was put to Slot.
“That is difficult because I can only judge him on the quality he has now, and I’m not an expert on the reason why Thiago could do this, and what you need,” Slot said during his pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend’s trip to Leicester.
“The first thing that comes to my mind is stay fit.
Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool.
So my first take is stay fit, and if he does stay fit, I see no reason why he would regress, and the club as well, otherwise we wouldn’t have given him a two-year contract.”
Despite Slot being wary of making any predictions on Van Dijk’s future, the Liverpool boss is in absolutely no doubt about his impact on his squad.
“It’s almost difficult to describe because you know how important he is when you see him play, so that’s what we all see,” Slot said.
