Arne Slot has spoken about Liverpool’s Premier League title battle with Arsenal after the Reds’ win over Wolves.
Liverpool secured a scrappy 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday to ensure that they remain seven-point ahead of Arsenal in the title race.
The win was the Reds’ first three games after a disappointing 2-2 draw with Everton and a 1-0 loss that confirmed their exit from the FA Cup.
Arne Slot’s side started the game well, going two goals up in the first half courtesy of goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.
However, they were unable to match the Wolves’ energy in the second half and had to hold on to secure the important win that ensured that they remained in a commanding position in the title race.
Meanwhile, the 2-1 win over Wolves extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to 21 games in the league.
While that is impressive and is the longest such run in the league currently, the Reds’s closest title challengers, Arsenal, are also on their own run that has kept them on Liverpool’s toes despite their injury woes.
The Gunners followed up their 5-1 win over Manchester City in round 24 with a 2-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday.
The win at the weekend extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 15 games in the league, keeping them in an ideal position to pounce on any Liverpool slip-ups.
Arne Slot makes title admission
Speaking after Liverpool’s win over Wolves at Anfield, Slot acknowledged the intense battle to win the Premier League, citing Arsenal’s 15-game unbeaten run to prove the title race is difficult.
“In a season like this, we have played so many great games, but in a season you want to win something, you have to win the difficult ones as well when you are not playing your best,” he said after the Wolves win.
“We were so close on Wednesday, this time we did survive.
Speaking about the title race and the competition with Arsenal, Slot said:
“If you look at the last few seasons, it has mostly been a battle between two teams.
As things stand now, it mostly looks like between us and Arsenal.
“I believe they have a 15-point game unbeaten run, and I think at the start of that, we were seven points clear of them, and we still are now?
So it tells you how well they are doing but also how well we are doing.”
“You can never breathe in this competition,” he added.
“If you want to compete for something special, then you have to win a lot of games in this league.”
