Arne Slot has spoken on one opposition player in particular as Liverpool welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield tomorrow evening.
The Reds are looking to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and maintain their impressive home record in the Carabao Cup.
Arne Slot’s men, unbeaten in their last nine home games in the competition, have won their last four in succession.
The hosts will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold, who picked up an injury during Saturday’s 2-0 win at Bournemouth.
Conor Bradley is expected to continue at right-back.
Tottenham’s January reinforcements could play a crucial role, with new signing Mathys Tel eligible for selection.
The French forward, who joined on loan from Bayern Munich with a £45m option to buy, brings pace and technical ability to Spurs’ attack.
Tel has described himself as a “physical player, fast, technical” who “plays every moment with heart”.
But for Slot, it’s one former transfer target he is keeping an eye on.
What did Arne Slot say?
Speaking in his pre-Tottenham press conference, Arne Slot namechecked defender Micky Van de Ven and suggested that Spurs would be a bigger proposition with his compatriot in the side:
“The injuries Tottenham had the last time we played them, it would have been a little more in our advantage if we had played them one week later again, although we lost against the ones that were fit that time.
“They’ve brought in three players, the goalkeeper was already there in the window, so now we face two different ones.
I wonder if Micky Van de Ven is ready to play, he of course has a big impact on that team, so yeah it might change.”
The Dutch defender recently revealed that Slot had tried to sign him for Feyenoord amid his move to Wolfsburg, and also heaped praise on Liverpool as a team:
“Arne Slot wanted to sign me for AZ when he saw me play in the first season at Volendam,” the 23-year-old said.
“The club refused to sell me, and I had to accept that they would not let me go.”
“When he was at Feyenoord, he tried to sign me too, but by then I had already signed for Wolfsburg in Germany.”
He added on Liverpool:
“Slot is doing really well.
Liverpool is now a fantastic team, and he is showing again what a brilliant coach he is.”
“Every player who has worked under Slot will tell you great things about him.”
“In the few talks I had with him at the time, I got a great feeling about his managerial style, his coaching, and his ideas in football?
