Arne Slot is openly expressing his ambitions for his tenure at Liverpool, acknowledging the expectation to win trophies as part of the job.
His official duties commenced on Friday as he welcomed players back for pre-season and began his media commitments.
During his first press conference as head coach, Slot appeared relaxed yet confident, striking a balance of honesty without oversharing.
The 45-year-old faces the challenge of potentially missing up to nine first-team players until August 5.
This is due to their involvement in the Euro and Copa America semi-finals with England, the Netherlands, France, Argentina, Colombia, and Uruguay.
What did Arne Slot say?
Arne Slot has embraced the pressure of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, emphasizing his determination to win trophies.
Slot acknowledges Klopp’s legacy as Liverpool’s most successful coach in a generation since Kenny Dalglish’s first spell and is undaunted by the challenge of following in his footsteps at Anfield.
The Dutchman achieved the Eredivisie title and Dutch Cup during his three seasons at Feyenoord and expressed his ambition to replicate and build upon that success with Liverpool.
In a chat with reporters at the AXA Training Centre after his public press conference, Slot said: “I think if you work at a club like Liverpool, trophies are the aim.
“The players have that aim, the club has, the staff have and the fans have.
“We’re here to win something.
“We’re here to become better players, to become a better team and as an end result of that, we want to win trophies.
“We come here on a daily basis because we want to improve and we want to play special games.
“But we’re here at this level because every player, and the manager as well, has a burning desire inside of him that he wants to win.
“Probably because you want to win so bad, that’s also the reason why you want to improve if that makes sense.
“It’s difficult to find the number because if you follow the Premier League, you follow Liverpool, you follow some other teams, so you see them a lot but more in a general way.
“But then the moment you get to know that you will become the next Liverpool manager, and you have seven weeks holiday, which was quite long for me, there was a lot of time to watch many games.
“It’s a compliment to Jurgen that many games looked the same.”
