Arne Slot was not at the top of many people’s lists as the news broke that he would become Liverpool’s next manager last summer.
The man tasked with the incredibly difficult job of taking over from Jurgen Klopp.
The club’s faith in the Dutchman has been repaid in full as Liverpool have played out an extremely impressive first campaign under his leadership.
Last summer, Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool, a decision that shocked everyone connected to the club, as many questioned whether the period of success the club had experienced under Jurgen Klopp would come to an end with his departure.
The German blamed fatigue for his decision to step down, as the job had led to him “running out of energy”, mentioning that if he can’t give his all anymore, then it was time for someone new to take over the management of the team.
A manager whose style of play was defined by desire and passion, Klopp aligned himself with that philosophy, and as a result ran out of steam.
In his leaving speech, Jurgen Klopp encouraged the supporters to get fully behind Slot, as he created a new chant that has now become infamous – “Arne Slot!
Na, na, na, na, na, na!”
A manager with new ideas and new energy, Arne Slot has certainly provided that.
Building on Klopp’s success, with minimal incomings last summer, Slot has guided Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table, competing for all four major trophies.
Despite a difficult March, that saw Liverpool exit the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, Liverpool’s former elite development coach Vitor Matos has hailed the work of Slot as ‘exceptional.’
Vitor Matos was at Liverpool from 2019 to 2024, with an original focus for the Portuguese coach to smooth the transition for the U21’s hoping to join up with the first team, but he became increasingly more involved with the senior squad over time.
When Klopp left, Matos left too, but Matos has been pleasantly surprised with the impact Slot has made since his arrival in Liverpool.
Speaking to the Training Ground Guru Podcast, Vitor Matos said: “What Slot did is outstanding, because it is not easy to replace Jurgen.
This season they are having having a lot of success, so this is good.”
Arne Slot will be looking to emulate the legacy that Klopp left at the club, becoming just the seventh manager to win a league title as manager of Liverpool Football Club.
