Liverpool manager Arne Slot has revealed his thoughts on the club’s UEFA Champions League round-of-16 opponents.

Liverpool were drawn with French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the first knockout stage.

After finishing first in the league phase, it was thought that the Reds would get a weaker team.

But they have been a different beast since the turn of the year, beating Manchester City 4-1 in the penultimate league phase game and securing a 10-0 aggregate win over Brest in the playoffs.

Reacting to the draw, Liverpool coach Arne Slot praised PSG’s quality, but refused to get drawn in into the euphoria of the tie, as his teams immediate focus is getting ready for their upcoming Premier League game against Manchester City.

“At this stage of the competition, the quality of opponent is only going to be of a very high standard and in PSG, we have drawn a team and a club with real European pedigree,” Slot told the club’s official website.

“They qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League in style earlier this week with a big win against Brest, and they had some really good results in the league phase, defeating Stuttgart, Manchester City, Girona and Salzburg.

“As is the case with ourselves, PSG are top of their domestic league and are enjoying a long unbeaten run.

This tells us all that we need to know about the challenge that we will face, but it is also a challenge that we will look forward to, knowing that we also fully deserve to be in the last 16.

“Of course, our immediate focus is on our upcoming Premier League fixtures, starting with Manchester City on Sunday, but we will be doing everything we can to ensure that we are in the best possible shape when the Champions League resumes.”

Liverpool will take on the reigning Ligue 1 champions over two legs next month.

The schedule was confirmed on Friday, with Arne Slot’s side first travelling to Parc des Princes before the return fixture at Anfield.

The Reds have a previous history in Europe, first clashing in April 1997 over two legs in the semi-finals of that season’s Cup Winners’ Cup.

It would be more than two decades before they met again competitively, this time, it was two games within the Champions League’s group stage in 2018.
