Arne Slot has refused to comment on the contentious decision not to send off James Tarkowski in the Merseyside Derby on Wednesday.

Liverpool continued their march towards their 20th league title with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday.

In their first game since the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United, a second-half goal from Diogo Jota gave a dominant Liverpool side the win, bringing the Toffees’ nine-match unbeaten league run to an abrupt halt.

The game was the 246th iteration of the Merseyside derby, and Liverpool ensured that it went their way, unlike the last time they met at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowski, who scored the heartbreaking equaliser in the last game, was lucky to play the full 90 minutes on Tuesday after escaping a red card for a leg-breaking tackle on Alexis Mac Allister in the 10th minute.

VAR notified referee Paul Tierney to review the tackle over a potential red card, but the referee deemed it not worthy of a sending off for the Everton man.

After the game, Slot was asked about Tierney’s decision not to send Tarkowski off.

He said; “Alexis is OK because he kept on playing.

I’d prefer to talk about the goal, or Curtis Jones’ performance, or something else.”
