Liverpool boss Arne Slot has made a new claim about the club’s summer transfer plans that could leave fans worried.
The Reds’ plans this summer have been well documented and publicised.
Several journalists have reported that Liverpool have big plans this summer, with several incomings and outgoings expected.
Several names have been mooted as possible targets, including the popular names like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen.
Slot himself admitted that the club will be busy this summer.
“Liverpool should always be competing for a league title; we should always be competing for the Champions League.
I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level,” he told the BBC in January.
“I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well.
There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad.”
“But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also hinted that the club’s summer transfer plans may have played a part in his desire to renew at the club.
“I think they’re planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board as a Liverpool-connected fan to do the right job,” he said after the win over West Ham on Sunday.
“And hopefully the club will be challenging for titles for the next two seasons as well.”
“I think we 100% can improve.
It’s incredible how everyone can beat everyone.”
However, Slot has appeared to dampen the expectation of Liverpool fans ahead of the summer after admitting that he is happy with his current squad.
Speaking to the media ahead of Liverpool’s game with Leicester City this Sunday, Slot revealed that Liverpool’s successful contract negotiation involving Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk has affected his outlook on the summer.
“I think at Liverpool there is always a big summer, at a club like this,” he said.
“And it’s already a big summer now because maybe the players don’t follow everything in the media – me neither – but what I do know sitting here every time is that it was a big thing: ‘Can we hold on to them?’ And by holding on already to two [Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk], it’s already a big summer, and let’s see what the rest of the summer will bring.
“But it would be strange for me now to say I am not happy with the team we are having because I have said this for a year.
So, we are happy with the team we are having so maybe if we can even keep that team that would already be a big summer.”
Asked whether he agrees with the opinion ‘you go backwards if you stand still’ by not being active in the transfer market this summer, he said:
“We showed the opposite last season because we didn’t change anything, and I don’t think we went downwards.
