Liverpool and Arne Slot took a significant step toward securing a 20th English top-flight title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over relegated Leicester City.
Liverpool dominated proceedings with 68% possession and 28 shots but faced stubborn resistance from Leicester’s defence and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, who made eight saves.
Mohamed Salah epitomized Liverpool’s frustration, hitting both posts within three minutes, while Ibrahima Konaté’s first-half header was cleared off the line by Wilfred Ndidi.
Substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 76th-minute strike sealed the win at the King Power Stadium, leaving the Reds needing just one more victory to clinch the Premier League crown.
The 26-year-old lashed home his first left-footed career goal during a chaotic penalty-box scramble.
The right-back’s emotional celebration—whipping his shirt off to embrace travelling fans—highlighted the weight of his contribution amid ongoing speculation about his future.
While Liverpool’s defensive solidity (26 goals conceded, league-best) has propelled their campaign, set-piece inefficiency remains a glaring concern.
Against Leicester, the Reds won 13 corners but failed to convert any besides the corner that led to the scramble.
Statistical Shortcomings:
6 set-piece goals in 2024/25 (joint-fourth worst in PL)?
0 goals from 13 corners vs
Leicester, despite Leicester conceding the seventh-most set-piece goals
Luckily for the Reds, Arne Slot and his staff are well aware of the issue, with the Dutchman confirming post-match that he’s had plenty of meetings around the deficiency:
“To be fair, the idea and the plan was to have inswingers already in the first half, but there is a bit of freedom also for players to take an outswinger if they think that’s better or that they prefer that,” said the Dutchman.
“The work that we put in is that we’ve trained a lot, we’ve had a lot of meetings about it, we try every single time to improve the details and I think it’s normal for a coaching staff that’s only for nine or 10 months with that team that it doesn’t come from the first week.”
Meanwhile, it’s been reported that the Liverpool squad will be watching the Arsenal vs Crystal Palace together on Wednesday evening should the Eagles claim an unlikely win at the Emirates Stadium.
