Anyone who has ever been on the touchline knows how emotions can take over.
The intensity, the pressure, and the split-second decisions make it almost impossible to stay calm all the time.
It’s even harder when you’re leading a team fighting for the title.
When a game gets away from you in the dying moments, frustration is inevitable.
Liverpool’s Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park was one of those nights.
It was a chaotic match, filled with battles all over the pitch.
The Reds thought they had done enough to secure all three points, but football had other plans.
Everton equalized deep into added time, leaving Arne Slot fuming on the sidelines.
It wasn’t just the result that got to him, it was how it all happened.
Now, with the dust settled, Slot has admitted he lost his cool.
Arne Slot reveals truth behind his Merseyside derby outburst
“I think in general, or 99% of the time, I can cope with my emotions quite well.”
“But it’s clear that I couldn’t cope with my emotions well enough during the game, maybe even and especially after the game,” he said speaking to Sky Sports.
His anger stemmed from the way stoppage time played out.
“That had all to do, especially after the game, with how the seven minutes, the intentional five and ended up being eight, extra time minutes went, with so many things happening in those eight minutes.”
Looking back, Slot knows he could have handled things better.
“If it happens next time, I should act differently.
That’s completely clear,” he admitted.
“Because if I could do it one more time, I just had to go in and calm down and then maybe talk to the referee afterwards.
But easier said than done.”
Despite the frustration, Slot took some positives from the game.
“I saw things from my team that I haven’t seen a lot this season.
Slot knows that the second half of the season will be tougher.
“Teams are coming closer to the line, so they are fighting maybe even harder to stay up or to fight for Europe,” he explained.
But if there’s one thing the Dutchman has learned from the Goodison Park chaos, it’s that his squad is mentally ready for the fight.
“This team is not only about great quality but also about great mentality,” he said.
And that’s exactly what Liverpool will need in the weeks ahead.
