Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday night has all but cemented their path to a record-equaling 20th English league title, extending their Premier League lead to 13 points over second-placed Arsenal

Liverpool wasted no time asserting control, with Szoboszlai opening the scoring in the 11th minute?

Luis Diaz’s tenacity on the left flank allowed him to cut back for the Hungarian midfielder, who lashed a low shot through defenders Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn, leaving Nick Pope stranded.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 63rd minute through Mac Allister, who intercepted a wayward Newcastle pass, surged forward, and combined with Mohamed Salah before blasting into the top corner.

With 20 wins from 28 matches and just one defeat, Liverpool’s 13-point cushion over Arsenal—who drew 0-0 with Nottingham Forest—has shifted the title race from competitive to ceremonial.

Manager Arne Slot, serving a touchline ban, watched as his side showcased the same intensity that toppled Manchester City days earlier.

But some things did not escape his analytical eye when reflecting on the past few weeks as a whole – a period that has seen his side play five games in 15 days.

“Many things I’ve liked,” Slot told TNT Sports after the game, before revealing that he noticied of some of the criticism his side faced in recent weeks:

“Because after Everton, after Villa and the Wolves game wasn’t easy as well, people started to doubt some things about our game.”

“But we reacted so well against City, and all of a sudden everybody was very positive again.”

“Sometimes what you then see is players [think] ‘all of a sudden we are really good’, and they don’t do the same effort they did before.

“So for all the mental challenges we had, some people questioning us, then everybody really positive, the players just kept calm, and did the things they have to do.”

“That is making it as hard as possible for the other team to play against us, and eventually, normally our quality then makes the difference.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s European ambitions face a stern test against a resurgent Paris Saint-Germain, who routed Stade Briochin 7-0 in the Coupe de France quarterfinals last night.

The first leg at the Parc Des Prince is next week Wednesday followed by the return leg at Anfield on 11 March.
