Arne Slot has revealed what is even more important than Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a goal after the midfielder goal against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Liverpool moved 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League after beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 11th minute before fellow midfield partner Alexis Mac Allister midway through the second half.
The result saw Arne Slot’s men take advantage of second-placed Arsenal being held to a draw against Nottingham Forest earlier in the evening to increase their lead at the top of the table, albeit having played a game more.
Szoboszlai’s goal was his second consecutive goal in as many games, taking his total tally for this season to five.
That return represents an improvement for the attacking midfielder, who had been previously criticised for not producing enough attacking-wise.
Reacting to Szoboszlai’s contribution for the night, Arne Slot revealed that while he appreciates his NO- 8 chipping in with the goals and assist expected of an attacking midfielder, another aspect of his game should be more lauded than his goal and assists returns.
Asked if Szoboszlai have become more important for the team after scoring in back-to-back games, Slot revealed that the Hungarian has always been important for the club, but is beginning to be more appreciated now.
“I think he’s been very, very important to us the whole season,” Slot told TNT Sports.
“Not always was his quality seen.
But again, today, people talk about his goal, which they should because it was an important goal and a good goal.
“But I think what helped the team even more than him scoring a goal was the amount of times he wins the second ball; he wins the ball back for us, he runs for two players?
That probably deserves even more credit than him scoring a goal.
“But it is nice that he starts scoring goals as well because that in the end is also what you need to do if you are an attacking midfielder that wears the Liverpool shirt.
