Arne Slot has confirmed Joe Gomez may require surgery on the hamstring injury he sustained earlier this month.
Gomez first suffered the problem in December's win over West Ham and missed six weeks as a result.
He came back in for the FA Cup encounter against Plymouth Argyle on 9 February but lasted just 11 minutes before he had to be replaced.
Gomez has since missed the game against Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Slot confirmed he won’t be back for the midweek trip to Aston Villa.
“Joe will take quite a long time and will be out for numerous weeks.
“He worked really hard to be back and then the first game when he came back, after two or three minutes we saw him making a sprint and now he is out for weeks again.
“That is always very hard for a player at every part of the season, let alone in the part of the season everyone is looking forward to."
“He will miss large parts of the end of the season but we expect him to be back in the end phase of the season” Asked if he expects Gomez to undergo surgery, Slot responded: “He might but that is something we still need to assess.”
It leaves Liverpool with just three fit center-backs available for the coming weeks: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah
Gomez has played 17 times this season for the Reds, with 11 starts
The 27-year-old was a regular in the team over December when Konate was missing through injury and started six consecutive league matches.
Slot also confirmed Cody Gakpo is not available for the upcoming trip to Villa Park but is 'close to being back'
