Jamie Carragher was gobsmacked Ange Postecoglou fell for Arne Slot's 'hilarious' and 'obvious' mind games.
In the build-up Carragher questioned Spurs' manager's commitment to intense, attacking football when it seemed to be complicating matches for his team.
Just three days ago he was on punditry duty as they hosted Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, leading 3-0 at one point only to concede twice before the end and eventually win 4-2.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Slot said "how on earth can you play too much attacking football?" as he praised Postecoglou for making his team "a joy to watch".
He even went as far to say he "is a fan" hoping they will win a trophy this season - so long as it is not the League Cup, in which they have been drawn against one another for the semi-finals.
"That press conference from Slot on Friday was hilarious.
People thought he was defending Postecoglou - I don’t believe that for one minute that he was actually [defending him]," Carragher gave his alternative read of the situation on Sky Sports.
Believing it was a classic case of one coach goading his opponent, he added: "I thought he went too far, it was that obvious.
"He (Postecoglou) was desperate for Tottenham to play exactly the same way as they did against Manchester United and Liverpool could have scored 10.
In that press conference, everyone I spoke to - Liverpool supporters - it was obvious."
In the first half, Liverpool were easily able to pick apart their hosts' attempts to play out from the back.
