Arne Slot reckons Virgil van Dijk would be a successful manager – if the Liverpool defender makes a career U-turn.

The Reds boss was asked to name the players he believes can most likely to transition into management at the end of their playing careers.

And with little hesitation, Slot picked his experienced leader Van Dijk, even though the manager feels the club captain currently has no desire to enter the dugout.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Slot explained why the 33-year-old is often his go-to man to dish out instructions during matches.

“I know he’s not interested in becoming a manager, and that’s Virgil,” said Slot.

While Slot claimed he has no desire at present to move into management, the player himself hasn’t completely ruled it out.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast just earlier this season, Van Dijk spoke of his wish to stay in the game in some capacity and how he keeps a close eye on the next generation of Reds players.

“I said no [to management], but that’s also because coming to this hectic, busy, on-it life that my family is sacrificing a lot, my wife and my kid,” Van Dijk said in October 2024.

“To then have a year off or two years off and then going back into it… I don’t think I see it [management] happening, but never say never.

I would love to stay in football in the future, but at my time, I don’t know which kind of role, and it’s too far away to think about it.”

Speaking ahead of Sunday's win at Manchester City, Van Dijk brushed off questions about his contract situation, telling Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp: “It’s all about the next couple of months.

But as long as I’m calm, I think the rest of the world can stay calm as well.
