Arsenal and Liverpool in mega £150m title race as transfer pursuit heats up

There could be more on the line for Liverpool and Arsenal than just lifting the Premier League trophy this season.

The pair are the two most likely teams to take the championship this term, with Liverpool leading their north London opponents by eight points.

Arsenal will have the chance to cut that deficit down to five when they play their game in hand, but Mikel Arteta and co.

still have plenty of work to do if they want to take the Premier League title race down to the wire.

The Gunners wouldn’t have expected Liverpool in their first season under Arne Slot to have taken such a firm grip of the title race, with Arsenal criticised for not making the most of Manchester City’s slip-up.

However, they could be left reeling even more if they miss out on the league to current favourites Liverpool.

That’s because both Arsenal and Liverpool are said to be in the mix for Newcastle United marksman Alexander Isak.

Isak has already netted 19 times across all competitions this season, with the Swede’s goals having fired Newcastle to the League Cup final and put them in contention for Champions League qualification.

Understandably, Newcastle are keen to keep hold of the prolific striker and have reportedly slapped a £150million price tag on his shoulders.

There’s no guarantee that any club will match Newcastle’s valuation, but if the pair were both looking to sign the striker in the summer, it could come down to which camp can persuade him to join.

This brings it back to the ongoing campaign, as there would be few better incentives than flexing the Premier League trophy as a reason to sign on the dotted line.

If Liverpool get over the line, it would be proof that the Reds are still a trophy-winning machine, despite Jurgen Klopp having departed during the summer.

By contrast, Arteta is in desperate need of some silverware, given his only major honour as Arsenal boss came during the Spanish coach’s first season in charge.

A league title for the capital club could be invaluable for them moving forward, as it might end up sparking a trophy chain reaction of their own.

It might just add an extra bit of spice to the pair’s meeting at the beginning of May, which is currently scheduled to be the third-to-last match of the season.

The winner might not only take the Premier League title but also Alexander Isak too.
