Arsenal and their ambitions in the Carabao Cup were brought to a halt on Wednesday night as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United in the semi-final second leg.
This loss, combined with the 2-0 defeat in the first leg, resulted in a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate defeat, ending the Gunners’ best hopes of silverware this season – with only the Premier League and Champions League still up for grabs.
The match at St James’ Park was dominated by Newcastle’s high-intensity press and defensive solidity.
Despite Arsenal’s initial efforts to gain a foothold, they struggled to break down the Magpies’ defense?
Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon scored the decisive goals.
But things went from bad to worse on Tyneside for Mikel Arteta, as another forward picked up an injury last night.
Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal injury blow
Mikel Arteta confirmed that Gabriel Martinelli picked up a hamstring injury during the 2-0 defeat last night.
The Brazilian winger was forced off in the first half with a hamstring issue, which could potentially add to Arsenal’s growing injury list.
He was replaced by Ethan Nwaneri.
Speaking in his post-game press conference, Arteta said:
“He felt something, I think it was his hamstring and he wasn’t comfortable to continue.
“So we will have to have any MRI scan tomorrow to see the extent of the injury.”
Martinelli’s injury compounds the existing concerns for Arsenal, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus also dealing with their own fitness issues.
Saka is recovering from a hamstring injury, and Jesus is out for an extended period with an ACL injury.
This means that Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard are the Gunners’ only fit senior forwards.
Speaking before the match, Arteta admitted that he would have to be ‘flexible’ with his front line:
“We’re going to have to be very flexible in the front line and now the ones that we have and are fit, make sure that they stay fit and they keep contributing.”
With this latest injury, it’s fair to say that the North London club is going through something of a injury crisis ahead of the title run-in.
