Atletico Madrid have denied they are interested in signing Darwin Nunez from Liverpool this summer.

The striker faces an uncertain future at Anfield as his struggles this season continue.

Unable to secure first-choice status under new head coach Arne Slot, Nunez has only scored six goals so far in the 2024-25 campaign while he has started just 16 of his 36 appearances under the Dutchman.

His future remains the subject of speculation as a result, with Saudi Pro League clubs and AC Milan all said to be interested in his services.

Atletico Madrid have also been linked with a move for Nunez.

But the La Liga outfit’s CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, has emphatically denied that they have interest in the forward.

"Nunez is not part of the club's contracting plans in the coming period, and what was published about our interest in the player is baseless,” he told 365 scores.

"We are not looking for a striker, but our team needs to strengthen in other positions, which is what Atletico Madrid’s management is discussing at the moment."

While Atletico might have denied interest in Nunez, it would perhaps be a surprise if he did not leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

The Uruguayan was publicly criticised by Slot for his performances off the bench in recent clashes with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, before being left unused against Manchester City.

After Slot’s initial comments, Nunez took to social media to send an emotional, defiant message to his critics.

"I was not the best three weeks ago nor am I the worst now,” he wrote on Twitter last week after missing an open goal against Aston Villa.

I will give it my all until the last day I am here in Liverpool.

Resilience!"

Slot went on to explain his public criticism of Nunez ahead of facing Newcastle United on Wednesday, though revealed he had been impressed with the player's reaction since his initial comments.

Nunez was afforded a warm reception from away supporters at the Etihad when he went out to cool down, and again at Anfield when making his first appearance since Slot publicly criticised him as he came off the bench against Newcastle.

The 25-year-old again took to social media after the match, as he posted a picture of himself applauding Liverpool supporters and captioned it, ‘YNWA’ along with a heart emoji.

Former Reds striker Luis Suarez was among those to comment on the post on Instagram as he sent a message of support to his compatriot.
