The Atletico Madrid sports director has responded to some of the recent links between Liverpool and Julian Alvarez.

Reports last week asserted that Liverpool FC are preparing a club record bid for the Atletico Madrid striker, with the Reds ready to reignite their interest in the Argentine international after failing to secure his signature last summer.

Julian Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has recently confirmed that Liverpool were indeed interested in signing his client before he made the move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid last summer.

“I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last summer,” Hidalgo said.

“As for the future, this is not the right time to talk about it, as Julian is participating in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

This confirmation adds weight to emerging reports that Liverpool’s interest in the World Cup-winning forward never waned despite missing out on him previously.

It is even claimed that the club held negotiations with Manchester City, but a deal couldn’t be reached as City insisted on including Luis Diaz in the transfer plus a significant fee.

Liverpool valued Diaz at around £60 million, while City viewed him as a £45 million asset in the proposed deal, creating an impasse that ultimately allowed Atletico Madrid to secure Alvarez’s services for an initial £65 million with a further £17 million in add-ons.

However, according to his club, no move will be forthcoming.

Carlos Bossero, sporting director of Atletico Madrid, spoke to Saudi outlet 365scores to shoot down any suggestions that a move could materialize:

“Talk about Liverpool making an official offer to sign our player Julian Alvarez is not true, and what is being circulated is just rumors.”

“Alvarez is a key and important player in our project, and we have no intention of abandoning him, and the player himself does not pay attention to this gossip,” he said.

It would be very difficult to get the World Cup winner from Diego Simeone after just one season in the Spanish captial, especially with how well it’s gone and the sizeable investment made.

But there is no doubt that the Argentine international is a perfect fit for Arne Slot.
