Newcastle star Anthony Gordon looks set to miss the Carabao Cup final after being sent off in Sunday's FA Cup match against Brighton.

The England international raised his arm as he tussled with Jan Paul van Hecke, shortly after being denied a penalty.



Referee Anthony Taylor showed Gordon a straight red card, and VAR saw no reason to overturn the decision.

Unless Eddie Howe's side succeed with an appeal, it will be the second time in a row that they have gone into the Carabao Cup final without a key man.

Back in 2023, goalkeeper Nick Pope was dismissed in a league game against Liverpool and missed the final against Manchester United.

Gordon wasn't the only player shown a red card in the match at St James' Park.

"Anthony Gordon has gone over the top of Jan Paul van Hecke," pundit and former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Gordon knows he cannot get there and he has run into Van Hecke with two hands.
