Xabi Alonso has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Bayer Leverkusen under certain conditions, according to the club’s CEO.
Real Madrid’s interest in the former Liverpool man has become apparent in the last couple of days.
The 43-year-old, alongside former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, are reportedly the two major candidates to succeed Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian increasingly looking certain to leave Real at the end of the season.
The former Reds midfielder has become one of the most sought-after coaches in the world.
He was heavily linked to a move to Anfield for the majority of last season, as he guided Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title.
However, the Spaniard chose to stay at Leverkusen, opting to build on his success and to build on his achievement.
But a year after electing to continue his work at Bay Arena, talks about potential managerial changes at the Bernabeu are heating up, with Alonso a hot topic of conversation.
Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that the 43-year-old remains Real Madrid’s top priority to replace Ancelotti at the end of this season.
The legendary Italian manager is expected to be one of the casualties from what has been a poor season for Real Madrid, where they are in danger of going trophyless this season.
Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, had initially revealed that Alonso had no plans to leave.
“No, he’s staying, that’s it,” Rolfes said.
“He told me that there was nothing.
He has a contract with us.”
However, the club’s CEO, who also revealed that Alonso’s chances of leaving the club this summer have increased, has revealed that the 43-year-old and Leverkusen have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ for him to leave under certain conditions.
Addressing the subject of Alonso’s potential departure, CEO Fernando Carro has said the club has a “gentleman’s agreement” with Alonso that means he could leave BayArena to coach one of the clubs he represented as a player, including Real Madrid and Liverpool, should he wish to do so.
“In a few weeks, we’ll know if there’s a coaching change at our clubs, but the fact is that we’re a very professional club and we have to be prepared for anything,” Carro said (via ESPN).
“From the moment we signed Xabi, we knew he was going to be a great coach, and from the moment you sign one, you have to prepare others.
We have a gentleman’s agreement, and if a team he’s played for comes along, we can sit down.”
A move to Madrid would be a full-circle moment for Alonso.
As a player, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League with the Spanish giants.
