Ben Doak’s time at Middlesbrough has been cut short following a setback.
The Liverpool youngster, who had shown great promise during his loan spell, confirmed his departure from the club after a frustrating injury.
The young Liverpool winger impressed in the first half of the Championship season but has spent the last few months sidelined after a thigh injury in training.
It was a frustrating end to what had been a promising loan spell.
Doak had become an important player for Michael Carrick’s side, and there was genuine excitement about how far he could help push Boro this season.
Unfortunately, after picking up the injury in January, the teenager never made it back onto the pitch.
There were hopes from both Middlesbrough and Liverpool that he might recover in time for the run-in, but as the weeks passed, it became clear it wasn’t going to happen.
The 19-year-old returned to Anfield for treatment and rehab.
But he made a special trip back to the Riverside last weekend, watching Boro’s 0-0 draw with Norwich City and taking part in the post-match lap of appreciation with the squad.
That appearance got people talking, but any idea that he might feature again before the season’s end was quickly ruled out.
After the game, Doak confirmed his Middlesbrough departure on Instagram, thanking the club and its fans for the support he received during his time there.
He posted on his Instagram page, “Not the way I wanted to finish this season off through injury, but what a time I’ve had here.”
“Thanks to all the players, staff and fans at Middlesbrough for making my time at the club as good as what it was.”
“I will be forever grateful and wish everyone at the club the best of luck for the future.
UTB.”
Doak’s loan spell at Boro saw him contribute three goals and seven assists across 24 appearances, catching the eye of Premier League sides like Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town in January.
Liverpool rejected offers then, choosing to continue his development at Middlesbrough.
Now, the Reds have a decision to make this summer.
After showing flashes of real quality, Doak’s next steps will be watched closely.
