In a highly anticipated clash at the Copa America 2024, Colombia and Brazil played out a 1-1 draw at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The result saw both teams advance to the quarter-finals, setting up intriguing matchups in the next stage of the tournament.
Heading into the game, both Colombia and Brazil were vying for the top spot in Group D.
Colombia had already secured two wins, defeating Paraguay 2-0 and Costa Rica 3-1.
Brazil, on the other hand, had a mixed start, winning 4-1 against Costa Rica but drawing 1-1 with Paraguay?.
The stakes were high as the winner would top the group, potentially facing a less challenging opponent in the quarter-finals.
The draw meant Colombia topped Group D with 7 points, while Brazil finished second with 5 points.
Colombia will face Paraguay this Sunday at the University of Phoenix stadium in the quarterfinals, while Brazil will go up against Darwin Nunez’ Uruguay? at the Allegiant Stadium that same day.
The match was marked by intense play from both sides.
Brazil opened the scoring with a goal from Barcelona’s Raphinha in the 12th minute, while Crystal Palace man Daniel Munoz equalised on the stroke of half-time to ensure Colombia topped the group.
But it seems that Alisson was the culprit of a mistake that the Brazilian media highlighted after the game.
What did the Brazilian media say on the Alisson and Luis Diaz moment?
On Wednesday, the Liverpool goalkeeper prevented Diaz from scoring against him, and will be hopeful of keeping Darwin Nunez off the scoresheet this coming Sunday.
Globo, a Brazilian publication, pointed out however that Alisson nearly gifted his club teammate a goal last night.
They gave him a 5/10 and wrote:
“He was not to blame for the goal, but in the previous move he faltered playing with his feet, as he gave the ball to Luis Díaz, who shot over him.”
“The main save in the first half was on a free kick from James Rodríguez.
In the final step, he was safe when required.”
Meanwhile, Brazilian outlet Terra was not as harsh, giving him a 7/10 and suggesting he played his part in earning a point for Brazil
“Brazil kept searching, but couldn’t score?
Colombia tried to turn it around, but were stopped at Alisson, thus it finished 1-1 at Santa Clara.”
Alisson won the Copa America in 2019/19, and will hope to add another one to his collection this summer.
He has been the preferred option between the sticks for Brazil with Manchester City’s Ederson out of action with a eyebrow fracture.
